Firestorm 2007

(October 22, 2007)

It is eerily like October 2003; almost exactly four years to the date of “The Cedar Fire”. But this one may be much, much worse. As I write, dozens, perhaps hundreds, of homes are going up in flames in no less than eight separate firestorms in San Diego County. We have breathed the smoke and listened to the amazingly strong winds all night long. No one in San Diego got much sleep last night.

The area around our church and members’ homes so far has been spared, and to my knowledge, our church family is safe. But everyone in San Diego has a co-worker, friend, or relative who has had to leave their home on a moment’s notice in the middle of the night. Many of our acquaintances are going through a form of terror difficult to imagine.

The Santa Ana winds are preventing some local aircraft from getting off the ground to survey the real damage or drop water and fire retardants on the fires. So the blazes are simply burning out of control, fanned by 50 mile per hour winds. It appears there is little our valiant California firefighters (including personal friends) can do for the next 48 hours.

Times like these help us realize what is really important. Possessions may be replaced, but lives cannot be replaced. With God’s help, we will make it through, and where necessary, rebuild.

To our friends who receive the E-Vangel outside San Diego, we thank you in advance for your prayers and concern on our behalf. We are OK for now.

Please pray for our church members, our sister churches, and those whose lives are being threatened by the Southern California wildfires.
